Laser Therapeutic Effects

During each painless treatment, laser energy increases circulation, drawing water, oxygen and nutrients to the damaged area.  Thus, creating an optimal healing environment that reduces inflammation, swelling, muscle spasms, stiffness and pain.   Function is restored and pain is relieved as the injured area returns to homeostasis.
Clinical studies and research using laser therapy technology indicate the following beneficial effects of laser therapy on tissues and cells:
  • Anti-Inflammation
  • Anti-Pain (Analgesic)
  • Accelerated Tissue Repair and Cell Growth
  • Immunoregulation
  • Improved Nerve Function
  • Improved Vascular Activity
  • Increased Metabolic Activity
  • Reduced Fibrous Tissue Formation (scars)
  • Trigger Points and Acupuncture Points
  • Faster Wound Healing

Biological Effects of the Laser in Detail

Anti-Inflammation
Laser therapy has an anti-edema effect, causing vasodilation, activation of the lymphatic drainage system (drains swollen areas).   Resulting in the reduction of swelling from bruising or inflammation.
Anti-Pain (Analgesic)
Laser therapy has highly beneficial effects on nerve cells, blocking pain signals transmitted to the brain, decreasing nerve sensitivity and inflammation. Less edema, less pain. Production of pain killing chemicals such as endorphins and enkephalins from the brain and adrenal gland are increased.
Accelerated Tissue Repair and Cell Growth
Photons of light from lasers penetrate deeply into tissue accelerating cellular reproduction/growth. Laser light increases the intake ability of the cells enabling quicker absorption of nutrients while eliminating waste products.
Immunoregulation
Laser light has a direct effect on immunity status by stimulation of immunoglobulin and lymphocytes. Laser Therapy is absorbed by chromophores (molecule enzymes) that react to laser light. The enzyme flavomono-nucleotide is activated enabling production of ATP (adenosine triphosphate), a major carrier of cell energy and the energy source for all chemical reactions in the cells.
Improved Nerve Function
Laser light increases the process of nerve cell reconnection. Increases the amplitude of action potentials, the human body’s own mechanisms of actions to optimize nerve regeneration.
Improved Vascular Activity
Laser light significantly increases formation of new capillaries in damaged tissue, accelerating the healing process while reducing scar tissue.  Acceleration of angiogenesis, causing temporary vasodilation, an increase in the diameter of blood vessels.
Increased Metabolic Activity
Laser therapy creates increased output of specific enzymes and increased oxygen for blood cells.
Reduced Fibrous Tissue Formation (Scars)
Laser therapy reduces the formation of scar tissue following tissue damage from cuts, scratches, burns, surgery and much more.
Trigger Points and Acupuncture Points
Laser therapy dramatically stimulates muscle trigger points / acupuncture points non-invasively providing musculoskeletal pain relief.

FAQ's

  • Laser treatments are a cash modality. We can advise you about rates in your area.
  • Laser therapy has photobiomodulation beneficial effects for relieving pain, resolving inflammation and increasing the speed, quality and tensile strength of tissue repair. It has also been shown to stimulate the immune system, resolve infection and improve the function of damaged neurological tissue. Laser therapy is also effective in increasing collagen production, bone repair, reducing edema, increasing lymphatic drainage, and increasing production of capillary beds.
  • LED light therapy describes the color in terms of the wavelength of the LED's. The wavelength is measured in nanometers (nm). The human eye sees wavelengths as colors. Infrared is outside of the visible spectrum and cannot be seen by the human eye.
  • accordion-body">Lasers work, as an example, by increasing ATP (adenosine triphosphate) synthesis in the mitochondria, activating the electron transport system, and many other biochemical and biophysical reactions in tissues and organs.
  • No.
  • Patients feel a warm sensation while they are receiving laser therapy.
  • Yes. Often, from the first treatment the range of motion will increase.
  • Results vary with each patient. However, in our experience results last for 3-4 days after the first treatment. The period of pain relief increases as more treatments are performed.
  • We have seen that many patients get immediate relief from their first treatment.
  • Both contain diodes (a small light with two wires connected to a filament inside) that can be made of the same materials, usually silicon with specific minerals added in specific amounts to produce different colors. In lasers, the diode is mounted in a well-shaped area (like a small tin can with one end removed) that is lined with reflective materials that sends, generally, only one wavelength of light. The result is a narrow beam of light that is concentrated into a beam, referred to as “coherent” light. However, when using low power levels (soft lasers) the light energy does not remain coherent and scatters when it hits the skin. This is given as the explanation why LED’s and low level laser devices have similar healing effects. Most low level (or cold) lasers have a total output of about 100 mw. The HealthLight 3 pad system output is over 17,000 mw. More power generally increases beneficial nitric oxide release and shortens treatment times. Lasers must be used under medical supervision in a clinic. LED Infrared Light therapy can be used as unattended therapy, in a clinic or a home.
  • The number of treatments varies based upon conditions. Generally, 5-6 treatments are needed in a treatment cycle to achieve the best result.
  • In most jurisdictions, yes. We provide thorough training which covers operating the laser. Our Treatment Atlas and Protocols explain how to treat both acute and chronic conditions. All treatments are completed under your supervision.
  • Contraindications include the following: direct laser exposure over the eyes; directly over a gravid uterus; directly over a known cancerous tumor, and directly over thyroid tissue.
  • Yes.
  • Ultrasounds are divided into diagnostic and therapeutic models. Only the therapeutic models are able to treat common conditions. Studies are mixed on the effectiveness of ultrasounds for treating pain and inflammation. Lasers allow for many more treatment modalities at much higher power without the need for messy ultrasound gel.
